How to Prune an Olive Tree

Olives are the key element in the production of olive oil. Olives or olives can be collected in two ways: in large quantities, produced by a healthy olive tree and pruned properly or in small quantities and poor quality resulting from an ill olive tree and pruned incorrectly. Believe it or not, watering the olive tree with gardening plant drip irrigation is not enough, pruning olive tree is important for the production of olives annually. Make improper pruning can cause severe illness and deterioration of the tree, drastically, it would not produce its natural fruit.

Examine the tree sap. You must perform pruning when the tree "sleeps" or sap flow is scarce. To perform this test you must cut a small piece of branch 6 cm in length.

Try to peel this piece of branch as wearing the anti-cutting sleeves. If the skin or shell of tree leaves and can be removed without problem it means that the sap flows to high levels and, therefore, the pruning with carbon steel pruning shear is harmful to the health of the tree. If the skin or shell is broken into pieces and this dry means no pruning receives sap and will be beneficial.

Disinfect all tools. The olive tree is a living tree and can suffer, like any living being, diseases caused by bacteria. Clean with the help of alcohol or hot water all the tools that you use during pruning the tree.

Cuts the deteriorated or damaged branches, always with outward inclination tree. If you make tilt in the tree branches they grow in that direction and collide with other branches, damaging and even reaching break.

Make a slight pruning. You just have to cut the most damaged branches or old. If you make a very severe pruning the tree you'll trigger the development of pacifiers or bad herbs around the tree, these herbs will consume the nutrients that the olive tree needs for health and production and therefore take longer to produce olives or they are of poor quality .

After pruning you should clean the tree. To prevent the proliferation of insects or bacteria must fumigate the olive tree. Please allow 48 hours from pruning to spraying so that the chemical is not absorbed by the olive tree.
